The Concept Of Noi

Just as our name implies, Noi (Us in Italian) is what we are all about. We are a company built on relationships, friendships, mutual respect and common values. Working together with the client so that their vision and individual needs can become a reality is the most important part of the Noi (Us) philosophy.  Noi is a salon that cares about you, the client even after you’ve left the salon. All this is done with unparalleled service in a sophisticated, elegant yet casual environment.
So become one of us: our look, our philosophy, our client, our friend, Noi.

Who We Are

Rick Breco and brothers Massimo & Giuseppe Topo came to Rome from southern California and brought with them a new concept & look that is taking over the Eternal City. Combining the casual sophistication of California with the classic elegance of Italy is their unique winning formula. They have also managed to fill a huge niche market in Rome, the international community.
Noi is a relaxing, intimate, antique filled boutique salon with a charming outside courtyard, yet still has that clean, comfortable California esthetic, giving the salon a true international feel.
“True beauty comes from within” says Rick “and when the client feels good and is confident they look beautiful! It’s great to see a client leave the salon viewing themselves in a more positive light.”  Massimo mentions “these days there’s no more having to conform to someone else’s ideas of what beauty is. The new definition is yours and your own sense of individual style”.
Rick, Massimo & Giuseppe consult together, and with their clients input, mutually achieve the perfect color, cut & style for them. Unlike other salons the stylists at Noi don’t “own” their clients and the client always feels comfortable going to any stylist at the shop. “I think the group consultations help give the client that confidence” quotes Giuseppe. Possessed with world class skills and believing in constant, continuing education, the client at Noi can always feel confident that they will leave with a contemporary, fashionable, yet wearable, workable style that will be easy for them to maintain once they leave the shop.
Their talent, enthusiasm and passion combined with teamwork and honest, open communication is what keeps them on top. They are constantly exceeding their customer’s expectations.
Being a referral based business; it’s easy to see why Noi has become the fastest growing Salon in Rome and the international community.

The clientele come as much for the cutting conversation as the LA-trained stylists."

From Veneto Views, The American Embassy, Rome:
"I have never had such a great experience in a salon anywhere! The "Noi Boys" are Southern California transplants who had salons from San Francisco dotting the coast all the way down to La Jolla. Even though they have been here for just a year and a half, they are the number one English-speaking American-owned salon in Rome. Just to add a little frosting to their braggin' rights, they have just been voted one of the top salons and colorists in the world (the only salon in Italy) by Women's Wear Daily Salon (WWD Salon). They have a gorgeous salon (conveniently located in Piazza del Popolo) with a beautiful private outdoor courtyard. Their work is unsurpassed! Every client I have seen come out of Noi looks incredible and I think most important of all, they felt incredible about themselves. They are a moderately priced salon and in my opinion "kings of color" and styling. The "Noi Boys" are a charming trio, who will go to any extreme to make you feel at home and welcome. Every time I've been there, I've been catered to and pampered. They are always there to offer coffee, wine, champagne and a stack of American magazines. I highly recommend Noi Salon."

"Just a year old, this salon, owned by brothers Massimo and Giuseppe Topo and American ex-pat Rick Breco caters to the city's jetsetters and young aristocrats."

"To truly spoil a VIP in want of superb hair-styling, check out Noi Salon, an antiques-filled, California-style beauty salon across Piazza del Popolo from Hotel de Russie. Ask for Rick, Massimo or Giuseppe, who make house (or hotel) calls upon request."

"Noi Salon, discretely located in the Piazza del Popolo at the back of a courtyard between Da Bolognese restaurant and Café Rosati, is a great find for travelers to Rome who are hesitant about seeking personal services because their Italian is too shaky. Rick, an American stylist from southern California, and Neapolitan brothers Massimo and Giuseppe, who owned salons in Laguna Beach and La Jolla for 18 years, opened this spot in the heart of Rome last June. Using exclusively American products, they offer expert coloring, cutting and styling for men and women with the opportunity to explain exactly what you want in English."

"Last year, two California-based hair stylists decided to take on the competitive Rome salon market, where there are at least as man parrucchieri as churches (there are about 950 churches). Rick Breco, a native Californian, and Massimo Topo, a Neapolitan-turned Californian-turned Roman, took a bold step when they opened their salon at Piazza del Popolo 3. They needed a market niche that would set them apart and found it in a concept embodying the name of the place, Noi."

The Noi Team: Biographies

Massimo Topo

Massimo a native of Naples, Italy, always knew he wanted to be a stylist. At the age of twelve he started working in a salon and by the age of fifteen he began his apprenticeship and training. During that time besides working in the salon, he worked fashion shows and did stage work in Milan and Bologna. At eighteen he owned his first salon in Naples employing five stylists and he rapidly became the hottest young stylist in Southern Italy. When he was twenty he turned his salon over to his younger brother Giuseppe and headed for California.
Massimo started working at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel, where once again his talent soared him to the top as the most requested stylist there. It didn’t take much time before Massimo open his first salon in La Jolla, La Coupe Savage. One of La Jolla’s first full service spas, Massimo opened up with sixteen employees and took a Jolla over by storm adding corporate CEOs, princesses and even Oscar and Emmy nominated actresses to his résumé. Two years later Massimo expanded his talents back to Orange County opening up his second salon in Laguna Beach, where after a few years he joined forces with Rick at Furioso then opened two more salons in La Jolla.
After a very successful nineteen year run Massimo had the strong urge to go back to his roots (pun intended) and with encouragement from Rick, he and Giuseppe moved to Rome.

Giuseppe Topo

Inspired by his older brother Massimo, Giuseppe also began his career as a stylist at an early age. Sticking with the European tradition of apprenticeship, he began at sixteen under the same seasoned veteran as Massimo. Giuseppe began his career focusing on fashion shows and pageant work styling several of the Miss Italia contestants. This led him to doing work in TV and movies. When Massimo moved to California he took over Massimo’s successful salon in Naples. Graced with the same talent as his older brother he expanded the already popular salon in central Naples to two more spa/salons in the prestigious areas of Vomero and Posillipo.
When asked by Massimo to join him in La Jolla, Giuseppe jumped at his chance to pursue the “American Dream” and sold his salons and moved to California. He took over managing and working with Massimo the La Jolla salons while Massimo split his time between La Jolla and Laguna Beach. Giuseppe became immensely popular becoming booked months in advance and when Massimo approached him with his decision to move back to Italy he made the tough decision to either take over the La Jolla salons or move with him and Rick to Rome. Luckily he chose Rome.

Rick Breco

Rick, the “senior” stylist at Noi began his training in the mid seventies in Honolulu. While in school he was lucky enough to be selected as Paul Mitchell’s personal assistant when he moved his operation to Hawaii. Later he had his advanced training with Paul Brown, who he worked for after the completion of his program. After several years with Paul, as with many stylists, Rick had his own ideas & went “down the street”. In his new environment Rick became the style & grooming instructor for Pan Am airlines, making as he puts it, “the skies a more beautiful place to fly ‘. There he also became an advanced trainer himself to students and junior stylists. But once again he had his own ideas & went “down the street” but this time to open his first salon with a co-worker Rick Hoo. After ten years in Hawaii, “Island Fever” set in and he moved to the San Francisco bay area. Always wanting to stay on top of his game he continued his education with Sasson & Yosh (both THE big names in hairdressing at the time) and bought his second salon in Sonoma’s wine country. The bay area embraced Rick, and during one of America’s largest recessions in the early eighties his business flourished. He was even interviewed on ABC about how he did it?
Originally from Los Angeles’ beach towns and having sand & salt water in his veins he decided to leave the north for warmer weather and settled in Laguna Beach, south of Los Angeles. He started working at Furioso where eventually he and Massimo joined forces. After eighteen incredible years at the still hugely successful Furioso, Rick hit his mid-life crises and wanted to move to Europe. So with very little convincing, he, Giuseppe and Massimo came to Rome.
