marco moretti Radio Citta FuturaMarco Moretti
For our introduction to Italian pop 101, who better to ask than Marco Moretti, programming director of Radio Città Futura, FM 97.7 (This is a great station, by the way, broadcasting the BBC World News as well as a host of great programming, available on FM and streaming live.) Marco gave us his "ever lasting" playlist, songs that have become part of the Italian vernacular, and essentials for any collection. What better to music to have in your ears as you walk around the Eternal City?

Joie Davidow: Italian Pop Divas

"In the 1970s, when I first arrived in Rome, as a young student, I fell in love with the raspy, heart-breaking voices of Italy's pop divas. The sound was a cross between Janis Joplin and Helen Reddy, the voice of a woman who had stayed up all night crying and smoking cigarettes and the voice of a woman who could roar. I was especially in love with the sometimes sentimental, always moving ballads. Most of these women, of course, are past retirement age now, but most of them are still performing and recording, their voices barely diminished. If you don't know them, meet them now, and fall in love as I did." Joie is a founding partner, along with Vikki Ericks, of InRomeNow.com
