Estate Romana: The 31st Season

The Estate Romana, Rome's summer festival, now in its 30th year, is in full swing this month, with outdoor events throughout the city. In this month's newsletter, we've given you the highlights for the month of July, with links for more information.

EVENTS AND FESTIVALS

Castel Sant Angelo

There are few sights as breathtaking as the views from the terraces of the Castel Sant'Angelo. Every night from July 2 to August 24, the terraces will be aliave with a series of performances, including shows for kids, dance, cabaret, folk music. And there's a bar, gelateria, and a restaurant. This year, the historic prisons (which held so many famous figures, including the fictional Mario Cavaradossi of Puccini's Tosca) will be open for guided tours in groups of no more than 25 people, at 9:45 pm nightly. Tickets must be reserved in advance. Concerts begin at 8:45 pm and continue until 12:45 am. www.castelsantangelo.com

The roster includes not just traditional Italian music, but Celtic, Scottish...
Popular Dance at the Bastione San Luca
Learn the steps of the tango, waltz, flamenco, Celtic dance, taranta , pizzica and other popular dances. Or try belly dancing.
Cabaret at the Cortile della Balestra
Cabaret singers, comics, including Roman comedian Stefano Fabrizi, who will host the Notti Animate from August 19-26. Other performers throughout the summer include Stefano Vigilante of Zelig Off, Mago Mancini with his "Makkekomiko" review, Giulia Ricciardo of Zelig Off, Sergio Giuffrido, who will take the stage July 11; Henry Zaffa of Zelig Off and Che tempo fa, and the duet Noidellescarpediverse. Every Monday evening is poetry night with VersiKontroVersi, when the public will be invited to recite along with famous poems.
Shows for Children at the Bastione San Marco
Master pupppeteer Giovani Piantadosi, Cocò the clown, the pantomime of Rufino, fire ticks and numerous other artists.
Swimming at the Colosseum
Al Ombra del Colosseo (In the Shadow of the Colosseum)
In the park on the Celio hill, the Estate Romana hosts not just a series of concerts, but a 200 square-meter public swimming pool, a 1500 square-meter solarium, and a restaurant, with good food and wines — not to mention a spectacular view of the Colosseum. Entrance on Via di San Gregorio
The pool and solarium are open from 9 am - 6 pm, entrance €10. From 7 pm to 2 am, there are concerts, aperitivi, and finally, a dj set. Free entrance. www.alombradelcolosseo.it

Roma Er Tevere in Trastevere
Along the banks of the Tiber from Ponte Sisto to Ponte Rotto and on the Tiberina island, there's a nightly festival of shops, restaurants, music, dancing. You can have a beer and a healthy plate of food, at a riverside table overlooking the rushing waters. An outdoor cinema is set up on the island, although the films are all in Italian.

An entire village with sports activities, restaurants, cabaret, discos, poker tables, a kick-boxing championshp and much more. Piazza L. De Bosis, on the Lungotevere near Ponte Duca d'Aosta. www.romaestate.net
Festa di Noantri, Trastevere
Once an important street fair that engulfed the entire neighborhood for a full week, this traditional festival has dwindled significantly in recent years, to include some booths selling food and trinkets, a couple of stages with nightly entertainment, and, of course, the parade of the Madonna del Carmine through the streets. July 22-29.
Gay Village
At the Parco del Ninfeo, in the Eur quarter, bars, discos, restaurants, booths and events, including a Drag King Festival.

La Villa Incantata

Villa Ada: Roma Incontra il Mondo (Rome Meets the World)
The Villa Ada, on Rome's northern edge, is surrounded by a big park with beautiful paths, a lake and a sylvan atmosphere. As always, this summer's festival features and eclectic mix of ethnic and folk music from all over the world.

Villa Celemontana Jazz Festival

Celebrating their tenth year, the troupe presents a collection of some of the highlights from the past decade, using Roman history as the narrative through line.  As usual the group uses the words of ancient Roman writers to set the play in a historically accurate context, but don’t let that put you off, the Miracle Players are really funny!

Findings from achaeological excavations begun in 1986 in the convent garden of the Cappuccini have now been opened to the public. One-hundred findings trace the cultural and historic exchange among five Istrian territories (Slovenia), the Republic of Venice and Rome. The exhibition includes ceramics, metals, bone, relics, stone and glass dating back to the first century B.C., and the rare discovery of a sculpture in bronze believed to represent Atteone.
